Is Age 7 Too Early to Visit an Orthodontist?
One of the most common questions we hear from parents is:
“My child still has baby teeth. Isn’t it too early to see an orthodontist?”
Actually, no.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, enough permanent teeth have typically erupted to allow orthodontists to identify developing issues while the jaw is still growing.
Does This Mean My Child Will Need Braces?
Not at all.
Many children who visit us at age 7 won’t begin treatment for several years.
Instead, we’ll monitor growth, identify any concerns, and determine the ideal time to begin treatment if it’s needed.
What Happens During the Appointment?
During your child’s consultation, we’ll evaluate:
- Tooth alignment
- Jaw growth
- Bite development
- Spacing and crowding
- Permanent tooth eruption
We’ll discuss our findings, answer your questions, and create a plan that’s tailored to your child’s needs.
Why Early Evaluations Are Helpful
Early evaluations allow us to monitor development and, when necessary, intervene at the right time. This proactive approach can make future treatment more effective and, in some cases, help avoid more complex orthodontic issues later on.
