Why Braces Adjustments Are a Critical Part of Orthodontic Treatment
If you or your child are in the midst of receiving orthodontic treatment, we encourage you to not miss any of your braces adjustments if possible. These regular appointments keep your orthodontic treatment on track.
Why Adjustments with Braces Are Necessary
Braces gradually move teeth by gently stretching the ligaments that attach your teeth to your jawbone. This process is progressive, and adjustment sessions at key intervals are a critical part of realigning your smile. By missing one of these sessions, you may be increasing the amount of time that you have to wear braces.
While working with Dr. William, you will need to visit the office about every six to eight weeks so we can adjust the arch wires and bands that attach them to your brackets to keep your teeth shifting into their final alignment. Because every patient is different, the number of adjustment sessions required will depend on your specific orthodontic needs.
Adjustment appointments also allow the orthodontist to review your progress and replace bands, brackets, or wires that have been damaged, bent out of shape, or worn out. During these visits, you can also ask any questions you have about your braces or oral hygiene, especially if you are struggling to effectively keep your braces and teeth clean.
Does Getting Your Braces Adjusted Hurt?
Having your braces adjusted generally does not hurt. However, you may have some discomfort for a couple days after your appointment. If this occurs, you can eat soft foods that are easy to chew, eat or drink cold items or apply a cold compress, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever until the discomfort subsides.
