What Is Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment?

When parents hear the term “Phase 1 orthodontic treatment,” they often assume it means their child will be wearing braces for years.

Fortunately, that’s not the case.

Phase 1 treatment is an early orthodontic approach used only when it’s beneficial to guide jaw growth or address developing orthodontic concerns while a child is still growing.

Does Every Child Need Phase 1 Treatment?

No.

Most children do not require Phase 1 treatment.

Many simply need regular monitoring until all of their permanent teeth have erupted. During your child’s consultation, Dr. Dabney will determine whether early treatment is appropriate or whether observation is the best option.

When Might Phase 1 Be Recommended?

Every child is different, but Phase 1 treatment may be considered if a child has:

• Significant crowding
• Crossbites
• Underbites
• Severe overbites
• Jaw growth concerns
• Teeth that are erupting in unfavorable positions

Early treatment can sometimes help create room for permanent teeth, improve bite development, or reduce the complexity of future orthodontic treatment.

What Happens After Phase 1?

After Phase 1 is complete, children usually enter a monitoring period while the remaining permanent teeth continue to develop.

If additional orthodontic treatment is needed later, it often begins during the teen years once all permanent teeth have erupted.
